Midlife Crisis Walking Club
December 2025. An 18 mile walk with old friends in the Malverns. We finished tired, with heavy legs, but we had a right laugh and were and were proud of doing something worthwhile together. That was the start of what we called the Midlife Crisis Walking Club.
For a lot people over 40, life is all about responsibility and the same old routine. Work fills most of the week, family takes up the rest and the stress can build quietly in the background. Something shifts when you get out onto a trail though.
Being in nature is a great reliever of the stresses of adult life. The pressure and the worries fade a little with each mile. Walking makes conversation easier and you talk more honestly when you are not staring at each other across a table. Add in some old stories and a few dodgy jokes and you have a decent way to properly reset. A walk with your mates is good for the body and even better for the mind.
Message the group chat and see who's keen. Look up local footpaths. Apps like AllTrails or OS Maps make planning much easier, and many council websites publish walks in your area, often with a pub along the way. Start with a local circular walk one afternoon. If it sticks, aim bigger over time. An overnighter or maybe even a National Trail like the West Highland Way. The distance is not really the point though. It's mainly about having something to look forward to and accomplishing things with your friends.
Organise it. Get your boots on. Go for a walk, have a proper chat, share a few laughs. You will come back tired, but feeling good about yourself. Start your own Midlife Crisis Walking Club.
